NOW SHOWING: THE ROKU HOME EXPERIENCE

An augmented reality advertising experience built to showcase the Roku TV streaming platform and boost engagement with Roku owned properties.

THE PROBLEM

Roku is a smart television streaming platform that drives over 14 billion hours of content streaming annually. As of 2018, over half of all Roku hours streamed are on non-owned channels - Netflix and Youtube alone making up 1/3 of these hours. Beyond hardware sales, Roku profits through advertising on its owned Roku TV channel, but has since seen decline in ad revenue as result of non-owned channel popularity.
Roku's CEO, Anthony Wood, claims its hardware and lineup of popular streaming channels to be the driver for "foot-in-the-door" future investment, providing the company opportunity to capitalize on its advertising platform and drive advertising dollars in the future. Because of this, Roku offers deep discount of up to 15% off product lines.

HOW MIGHT WE

How might we increase streaming hours for the Roku TV channel so to maximize Roku's advertising revenue?

VIRTUAL REALITY IN CONSUMER EXPERIENCES

UNDERSTANDING THE  PERMITTING SYSTEM

Research details that products and experiences are 86% more memorable when sampled by consumers - product sampling tied to a memorable sensory experience driving conversion at 3 times likelihood as viewing product images.

In the vast digital economy, virtual reality offers outstanding opportunity to drive memorable, relationship building experiences between products, brands, and people - granting the ability to sample any product at the discretion of the user and build that positive association toward conversion.

MAPPING THE USER FLOW

After conception of the Roku Home Experience, I mapped the necessary flow a person would take in using the advertisement. In this, I cross-compared necessary products in exploring Roku products online and parameters necessary to define in shopping for a television.

User Flow

SKETCHES

In my sketching process, I considered different user interactions necessary in interacting with augmented reality, as well as native human motions and intuitive functions used to sell products over a digital interface.

Displaying popular streaming channels leverages Roku's "foot-in-the-door" conversion push, while providing discount for Roku Channel movie title interaction draws awareness in a memorable setting.
Additionally, the user can purchase their perfect TV on the wall of their own home, or jump back into the experience with saved settings if they are not completely ready to purchase a television when initially served the advertisement. After purchasing their perfect Roku TV, the user will remember the outstanding selection of free movies displayed for them in the advertisement, navigating to the Roku Channel with purpose.
